Sir, - Your Editorial of December 31st was a timely warning of the dangers to Ireland's environment and tourism from the pollution of its most scenic areas. The same edition reports the welcome resolve of An Bord Pleanala to stop the swamping of tourist areas with clusters of holiday homes.
These clusters are expanding at an alarming rate in number, size and destructive effect. For example, the Dunfanaghy/Portnablagh area of Co Donegal now has few patches of greenery without a planning notice and one current package of planning applications is for over 60 houses to scar Sessiagh Lake, one of its most scenic places.
Will property developers be allowed to turn our beauty spots into housing estates - and will the tourists still come to see them? - Yours, etc.,P. McKeever,
