Sir, - May I, through your columns, express my acknowledgement and admiration for the Mayor of Ballymena Mr James Currie and his unionist colleagues for their exemplary efforts for the tolerance of religious worship, in their support for the churchgoers at the Church of Our Lady, Harryville, Ballymena? Likewise to the RUC for their efforts in providing safety for the churchgoers.
The worthy stance taken by Mr Currie and his colleagues in Ballymena, I hope, will be extended to other areas of Northern Ireland and be reciprocated to, provide tolerance for all religious worship and celebration! The forces of religious bigotry must be confronted on all sides.
These actions represent a challenge to everyone for the freedom of expression and assembly and that most private of all, freedom of religious worship. Further, it is a worthy invocation of the Biblical teaching and a particular challenge to those groups who invoke its teachings so profusely! - Yours, etc.,
Ballymun Road, Dublin 9.
