Madam, – Last month The Irish Timesbrought to public notice the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company's demolition of the old mail boat railway station.

Now, right across the road, in a pincer movement, Dun Laoghaire County Council has a planning application (Part 8) in for a huge library development which will destroy the magnificent Victorian panorama on the Dun Laoghaire seafront.

The Royal Marine Hotel has been wonderfully restored and the Mariner’s Church is almost there (could they not use that as a library?). The proposed tall modern block will ruin the handsome Victorian vista – especially when viewed from the pier.

Members of the public have until close of business on Monday (October 5th) to object. One hopes the elected councillors will stop this scheme before the council start wasting €35 million they don’t have spoiling the beautiful town they inherited. – Yours, etc,

MARTIN McCARTHY,
