Madam, – While accepting that new guidelines regarding the display and sale of over-the-counter remedies containing codeine (Home News, August 2nd), are probably a good idea, can I suggest that the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland also issues guidelines to its members regarding the implementation of these new guidelines.
Today, on requesting a packet of Solpadeine in a pharmacy near my office near Dublin city centre, I was interrogated in public with the passion a Garda drug squad officer might reserve for a recidivist heroin user. I was asked what did I want it for? When did I last use any? Why not just take paracetamol instead? And several other questions.
I was eventually, almost begrudgingly, told I could have a small pack, if I gave them my name and personal contact details to be written down. I decided to wait and deal with my own local pharmacy near my home. A little sensitivity might be advised. – Yours, etc,
