Sir, - I would like to highlight the plight of Greystones Harbour, and the intransigence of Wicklow County Council regarding its repair or upgrading. The harbour area, the focal point of this seaside town, has been shamefully neglected and allowed to fall into disrepair through lack of funding and a cohesive plan to develop this valuable asset. Another year of heavy seas and high winds has left its mark on the fast-deteriorating north wall and slipway, which have been a source of great pleasure to both locals and visitors for many years.
I suggest that an umbrella group be set up to include a marine engineer, an accountant and a lawyer, which would represent all interests in the town. Its brief would be to advise Wicklow County Council on how to proceed and where to access funding, from sources such as the Lotto, the Department of the Marine, European Regional Development Fund and the American Ireland Fund. Why not designate Greystones as a pilot seaside resort scheme, as enjoyed by Arklow? Greystones harbour must be restored or redesigned in an imaginative way to benefit all its users. - Yours, etc.,
Rathdown Park, Greystones, Co Wicklow.
