Sir, - The Turkish Ambassador (letters, December 31st) puts across such a civilised and reasoned argument casting Greece in the role of the nigger in the woodpile in Greek/Turkish relationship, but then destroys all his arguments with one sentence of sheer propaganda: "Greece consistently encouraged the Serbs in their invasion of Bosnia".
This is totally untrue, on two counts:
Greece never encouraged any form of invasion of Bosnia, but did offer the Serbian people humanitarian assistance against the savage sanctions imposed on them by the West and the Islamic world, for which we will remain forever grateful. Furthermore, the Greek Government took part in several attempts to find a just political solution to the civil war in Bosnia Herzegovina.
Secondly, there was never a Serbian invasion of Bosnia. Boutros Boutros Ghali's report to the Security Council, dated May 29th, 1992, states clearly that all units of the Yugoslav Army (i.e., its non Bosnian members) have been withdrawn from the territory of Bosnia Herzegovina by that date. His report further stated that, in contrast, up to 30,000 troops of the Croatian army were still operating on the territory at the time of the report. Mysteriously, the circulation of that report to the members of the council was delayed until after the vote on the sanctions against Yugoslavia took place, three days later. - Yours, etc.,
