Madam, – Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan contends that he does not have the mandate to inject capital into the banks under the EU/IMF plan since the Green Party withdrew from government. If true, then with what authority does Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith reverse course on genetically modified food and feed and permit their importation into Ireland?
Not only is this another economically ignorant decision, but it is a serious blow to Irish tourism and food production.
According to the Programme for Government, the current Government stated, “We will declare the Republic of Ireland a GM-Free Zone”
Is this a solo-run by Mr Smith? He has no mandate to implement this U-turn.
The decision is counter- productive and regressive. It will increase job losses and negatively impact on our already imperilled economy. I call on him to rescind this decision immediately. I also call on Fine Gael and Labour to declare their opposition to this decision. GM food and feed in Ireland is an election issue. – Yours, etc,
