Madam, – The expression “going forward” was originally intended to mean projecting an apparent trend forwards on a graph, but as Martin Sheridan (November 2nd) points out, it has been hijacked to replace the simpler word “future”. Likewise, “exponential” – which implies a constant (large or small) growth-rate – has become confused with “large and rapid” growth itself.
While not advocating conservative prescriptivism, after all languages are dynamic and evolve over time, it is nevertheless a pity to see the true and useful meaning of words and expressions undermined by ignorant and popular usage. – Yours, etc,
