Sir, - Congratulations to Paul Cullen on his excellent summing up of the redoubtable Mr James Gogarty's career as a witness in the Flood Tribunal (The Irish Times, April 29th). Mr Gogarty's lack of due respect before the legal profession certainly did strike a chord in society, and I must say that I absolutely loved Martyn Turner's cartoon on the same day, showing the great octogenarian looking nonchalantly out of a car decorated with the scalps of barristers.
Incidentally, a close examination of Shakespeare's plays will reveal that the great bard shared Mr Gogarty's healthy contempt for lawyers, who are depicted in the plays as avaricious and arrogant. This proof that human nature is unchanging is some consolation for those of us who hold the legal profession in low esteem. - Yours, etc., Joe Patton,
