Madam, - One very important aspect was missing from your Editorial "Our alcohol strategy" (March 14th). I refer to advertising and promotion. That a product which causes so much damage to society is allowed to be glamorised by the industry is scandalous.
You quote the Government Chief Whip advocating doubling of penalty points for bank holiday weekends. If such action would be regarded as effective, why confine it to bank holidays? People are killed on the roads every weekend and most weekdays. The appropriate alcohol level for a driver should be nil and gardaí should have the authority to confiscate an offending driver's licence on the spot. There needs to be an advertising campaign to deglamorise alcohol and all other drugs.
If we want to tackle the problem, let's get serious. - Yours, etc,
JAMES MORAN, Knockanure, Bunclody, Co Wexford.
