Madam, – I must protest at the creeping use of the word “staycation” in your paper (most recently in “Jurys Inns go on expansion trail with £60m fund”, July 27th).

A staycation means staying in your own home overnight while on leave from work; visiting a hotel in this country is called “a holiday in Ireland”. New words inevitably enter our language, but they should not be used so unnecessarily or carelessly. – Yours, etc,
