Sir, - In relation to the Battle of Stalingrad, Neil Belton (Weekend, March 17th) said that "Von Paulus [the German commander] surrendered on January 31st, 1943, delivering a quarter of a million men into captivity." This figure is wildly inaccurate.
According to Anthony Beevor's Stalingrad - a book warmly recommended by Mr Belton, the number of prisoners taken after the surrender was 91,000, a far cry indeed from a quarter of a million. The rest of the German forces were either killed or captured during the battle - Yours, etc.,
