Sir, - Footballers and pop stars have fan clubs, so why shouldn't peacemakers have them too? I cannot imagine the level of patience that George Mitchell needed for his work in Northern Ireland. There is hardly another human being who would have stuck in there against all the odds, so painstakingly and for so long. Time and time again we thought the whole process would collapse in a shambles; there didn't seem to be a glimmer of light anywhere. Then Senator Mitchell would emerge from another gruelling session with a reassuring smile on his face. He gave us the courage to hope that somehow it would all work out ok. What an inspired choice he was!
There must be many others who share my sentiments and would like to let him know of the huge debt we owe him. He can be written to c/o Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson & Hand, 901 15th Street NW, Washington DC 20005-2301, USA. - Yours, etc.,
