Sir, - Pity about poor Gerry Adams being turned down for the freedom of Dublin. How he would love to strut amongst us on all those ceremonial occasions. Maybe, as a second best, his backers would now nominate him for the freedoms of London, Birmingham, Manchester, Warrington, Brighton, Guildford and, of course, Enniskillen.
He'd be a busy man, but then so were his buddies when they took their form of liberties in those same places in by-gone days. Wouldn't the people just love to have him there just one day a year, to join them in reflecting on the past? - Yours, etc.,
John Newman, Glasnevin Avenue, Dublin 11.
