Sir, - I am glad that the Department of the Marine and Natural Resources has started to answer back (January 14th) on behalf of forestry, something which other departments previously hosting the itinerant forest service declined to do.
Ray Monahan (January 2nd) and his like need to be told that when their final tourist has departed, through change of fashion, change of climate, world-wide slump, or whatever reason, the forests will still be there, a perpetually renewable national resource, and a provider of employment and prosperity for generations yet to come.
The decision to plant trees, to "reafforest the land" as Ulysses has it, was the best decision made by any Irish Government. - Yours, etc.,
