Sir, - Apart from Mary Holland's article on the flags issue and its solutions and complications in Carolina (Opinion, June 8th) the debate is still centred on British/Irish identities.
Is it not time to have a new set of symbols for the new order that has finally been put in place in the North of Ireland?
I suggest a new flag for the new devolved Government. Hold a national competition, encouraging artists and designers to come up with ideas for a new flag to encourage the notion of progression and equality, a symbol not of ancient tribal divisions, but of hope and forward thinking.
This should not necessarily take away from the identity of the individual. It could offer hope to a new generation, a generation deserving a better future. The idea could be extended to new the Police Service of Northern Ireland, to remove all historic references and to begin with a fresh start. - Yours, etc.,
Felim Egan, Sandymount, Dublin 4.
