Sir, - The letter from Bill Meehan about the first World War exhibition in the Letterkenny Museum (November 2nd) is a timely reminder of the important work yet to be done in preserving a neglected segment of our history.

The exhibition is just one of the many initiatives in recent years to gather and present information and memorabilia connected with the participation of Irish men and women in the Great War.

The Royal Dublin Fusiliers Association has had a number of exhibitions throughout the country. The first one was presented in 1996 in Dublin's Civic Museum. Last April, the Taoiseach hosted a State reception in Dublin Castle to launch our website www.greatwar.ie This is a useful starting point for anyone who wishes to learn about Ireland's involvement in the first World War.

There is a growing interest in the period as those researching family history discover supressed connections with the British army. As more than 210,000 Irish soldiers served during 1914-18, it is not surprising that most people have some family or local connection with a soldier.

A permanent home is needed for the growing collection of material. If properly displayed and supported by research facilities, it would attract Irish and international interest.
