Sir, - On a wall in the splendid Yeats Room of the Kildare Hotel and Country Club (aka the K Club) in Co Kildare, there is a plaque which reads: "To commemorate the occasion of John Bruton TD dining with Dr Smurfit in the Yeats Room on his first day as Taoiseach. Saturday, December 17th 1994."
So I was wrong to write in my column last Wednesday that John Bruton dined with a "high net worth individual on the night" he became Taoiseach. He dined with a HNWI on his first day as Taoiseach.
I am terribly sorry for this lapse.
By the way, isn't it a bit surprising that John Bruton got into such a flap over this admittedly lamentable error but had nothing at all to say about my more substantive point: that there is something suspicious about how Fine Gael was rescued so quickly from financial calamity within a very short time of it going into Government in December 1994? - Yours, etc., Vincent Browne,
Dublin 2.
