Sir, - If one were to visit somebody and find that he had kept souvenirs and mementos of a youth devoted to sport, I think one would be very surprised to be assured that all this had nothing to do with sport, and that it was mere nostalgia.
Yet Nuala O'Faolain (November 11th) tries to persuade us that the extraordinary popularity of the recent disc of old hymns and religious songs of earlier days has nothing to do with religion, but is mere nostalgia. One might ask: nostalgia for what? Could it be religious nostalgia?
"The lady doth protest too much, methinks." Could this be a case of repression of the religious and the spiritual. - Yours, etc.,
