Sir, - The "fadas ar strae" letter from Cathal Brown (June 1st) reminds me of all the botuin (mistakes) one sees everywhere, to prove that we are indeed illiterate in two languages.
On a Bus Eireann coach recently was the legend "siochain 49" both inside and outside. The word is meaningless. Had it a fada on both the first "i" and the "a", it would mean "peace".
The word for seats is "suioch ain" in the litriu nua. Is there no expert in the Irish language whom public bodies can consult on spelling, fadas and grammar, to stop us making a show of ourselves? - Yours, etc.,
