Sir, - As a factory worker I am compelled to record my outrage at Medb Ruane's commentary in her interview with Bernadette Sands McKevitt (May 9th). She states, "hearing her almost Jesuitical arguments and authoritative use of language, it is hard to believe the myths already growing around her . . . that until four years ago she worked in a Dundalk factory . . . "
Is it really that difficult for Ms Ruane to comprehend that people who work in factories are capable of an authoritative use of language, whatever about the "Jesuitical" aspect. I work with people whose viewpoint is seldom elicited, who nevertheless excel in, for example, sporting issues and who can deliberate, expand and articulate their viewpoint in what can only be described as an authoritative fashion. Others take an interest in trade unionism, politics or both and can construct a clarity on these issues that could illuminate the shallowness of many professional politicians and media commentators. What if Ms Ruane had substituted "Traveller" for "factory worker".
There is little problem acknowledging and condemning racism or sexism. What about classism? Ms Ruane, please do check your assumptions. - Yours, etc., Martin Maher,
