Madam, – The convention of not attacking the Ceann Comhairle is founded on the basis that to do so would be to attack the Oireachtas itself. This effectively means that the holder of this office is protected from obloquy.

I was always taught that with privilege comes responsibility.

Surely this means, in this case, that Deputy O’Donoghue must consider whether the current controversy regarding his expense claims is damaging the credibility and authority of the office of Ceann Comhairle. If so, despite our lack of any tradition of political resignation, he must relinquish the post.

This would not only allow him be called to account by the relevant Oireachtas committee but also to face the people of Kerry South if he wishes to continue as a TD after the next election, rather than be returned automatically as the serving Ceann Comhairle.

I make these remarks as a Fianna Fáil supporter and a genuine admirer of Deputy O’Donoghue’s achievements during long and distinguished public service.

The people, parliament and Government of Ireland need at this time to concentrate on the important issues to turn the economy and the country around. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – I think it is time the title Ceann Comhairle was changed to “Clown Comhairle”. John O’Donoghue has reduced this office to a farce. He should be forced to resign. Also, why does the holder of a supposedly non-political office, require a “political adviser” at a cost of €100,000 per year? – Yours, etc,
