Sir, In her article "Choice of arts avoids a career commitment" (January 22nd), Christina Murphy mistakenly asserts that Maynooth College "is the only place you can take anthropology". I would like to point out that an NCEA accredited BA in anthropology (by day and evening) has been available from LSB College since September 1995.
Unlike the arts degree in Maynooth, where anthropology forms one of two or three subject components, LSB College offers a concentrated degree in anthropology with a strong practical/applied dimension.
The BA in anthropology at LSB College lays the foundations necessary for students to proceed toward employment in fields as diverse as research and consultancy, community development, human resource management, heritage and tourism, arts and media.
Without doubt, anthropology (the study of humankind) is an exciting subject. It is heartening to see the expansion of the discipline in Ireland. Christina Murphy writes Maynooth is the only college in the CAO system which offers anthropology and the "Countdown to College" column was aimed entirely at students filling out their CAO form. It would have been confusing for students to have included courses such as LSB's which are not on the CAO form.
