Sir, - Mr Bertie Ahern (May 25th) said it was "unacceptable" that up to 15,000 young people a year should leave school early or achieve poor results in the Leaving Certificate.

Surely the way to lessen stress for students sitting exams is to talk positively about all results. Ten per cent accurately represents ability.

For some, 10 per cent might be praiseworthy, just as 60 per cent might be viewed with disfavour by others. Minds are confused if the Department of Education award certificates to those who achieve 10 per cent while others call the result unacceptable. - Yours, etc.,
