Sir, Momentum is gathering for our accession to EMU, and adoption of the associated single European currency, following endorsement at the recent Dublin Summit. The nascent legal tender the "euro" was held up to the (artificial) light.
Our previous experience with currency conversion was the introduction of decimalisation, on our membership of the EEC. A downside of decimalisation was a stealthy hike in the retail price level.
No doubt, in the event of a changeover to the euro, the Director of Consumer Affairs will hold a watching brief for the public and keep a weather eye on any exploitive practices that may be attempted by unscrupulous traders.
