Madam, - Some letter-writers have questioned the decision by MEPs to oppose the appointment of Mr Rocco Buttiglione to the position of European Commissioner, charging that this is an example of unjust discrimination.
However, Mr Buttiglione's views go beyond private morality and inform his policy decisions. He previously proposed an amendment to the Charter of Fundamental Rights which would specifically exclude sexual orientation as a ground on which discrimination would be prohibited. Luckily this amendment was rejected.
Isn't the very least that should be expected from a prospective Justice Commissioner, who is charged with overseeing the implementation of anti-discrimination measures, that he should actually believe that discrimination on the grounds set out in the charter is wrong? Mr Buttglione's record to date would not suggest that, on this level at least, he is a suitable candidate for the post. - Yours, etc.,
