Sir, - We congratulate The Irish Times on its very perceptive Editorial of February 6th, "Room For Meditation", advocating the urgent provision of suitable premises to house Hughie O'Donoghue's powerful and moving paintings, Episodes from the Passion.
None of us underestimates the extent of the challenge faced by the OPW in providing a home for these immense works, so generously offered to the nation by Mr Craig Baker. It may be well for us, however, to recall at this particular moment the opportunities we missed during the first half of the century, from the time of Sir Hugh Lane until the early 1950s, in repeatedly dismissing invaluable art donations by failure to respond or by outright rejection.
As we enter the new millennium, let us now give deserved priority to the accommodation and acceptance of this extraordinary gift. - Yours, etc., Anne Madden, Louis Le Brocquy,
Carlisle Street, Dublin 8.
