Sir, - Many thanks to Rory O' Toole (July 20th) for drawing your readers' attention to the enigma that is D.K. Henderson.

The D.K. Henderson of my imagination is a retired gentleman who composes his letters to The Irish Times while taking his dog for an early morning stroll down Castle Avenue and along the seafront. On returning to his house, he rolls up his sleeves, settles himself at his desk, takes out his fountain pen, and writes his letter in a precise, sloping script.

His second outing of the day is to the postbox. He drops off his latest missive and returns home to an afternoon of gardening and crosswords, content to have contributed in his own way to the running of the country.

I am probably completely mistaken. D.K. Henderson could be a Louis Copeland-clad businessman, who, while stuck in traffic in Fairview, dictates his letters by mobile phone to his harassed secretary, thus ensuring that they arrive in town before he does.
