Sir, - As an Englishman who has been living in Dublin for 18 months now, I knew what to expect when watching the England v Romania game in a pub on Tuesday night. So I thought I was prepared for all the locals going mad with glee every time Romania scored. Actually, I found it much harder to take than I had expected.
In the deep despair after the game I asked myself if I was just being bitter to resent the unbridled joy of the Irish spectators. I came to the conclusion that no, I wasn't. I know that if it had been Ireland playing against Romania the whole of England would have been behind Ireland. And when you think that half of the pub were probably Manchester United supporters and all of them were avid Premiership fans, the hypocrisy is too obvious to ignore.
Oh, let's face it, I am bitter.
