Sir, The report by your Environment Correspondent, Frank McDonald, on the efforts of the Howth residents, led by Ms Jean, Finn, to protect the East Mountain in Howth from developers takes me back to the early 1960s when my late father was one of the successful oral objectors to a similar attempt to capture that jewel in Dublin's crown. In his presentation, he quoted from the decision taken in 1934 by the Howth Urban District Council that East Mountain should be preserved in perpetuity for the use and enjoyment of the public.

In those days the decisions of the Howth UDC were published in booklet form and, no doubt, are available to your correspondent. Has any legal action been taken in the interim that would invalidate the farsighted decisions of those councillors? Yours, etc., Kilgobbin Lawn, Stepaside, Co Dublin.
