Sir, - I am saddened by some of the letters in your paper extolling the so-called heroes who died for Ireland between 1916 and 1922. Any thinking person will recognise that none of those people achieved anything for Ireland. In truth they created an evil that haunts this country down to the present day.
After all the killing, what did we get? A divided island, 26 counties in the South and six in the North, which still exists 80 years after. Thousands more have been killed in the name of Ireland since 1922, with nothing gained.
One great man who worked for Ireland with considerable success, yet never fired a shot, was Daniel O'Connell. If his advice and leadership had been followed after his death, Ireland would be a better place.
The ballot-box is more powerful than the bomb or the bullet. Kevin Myers is the only one making sense. - Yours, etc.,
John Murphy, Howth Road, Sutton, Dublin 13.
