Madam, - I admire Michael Warren's Gateway sculpture and believe the DúLaoghaire area committee has been hasty in voting for its removal.
The Gateway is unapologetically modern. Weighing in at eight tonnes and standing six metres high (and being orange in bright sunlight), it definitely asserts itself. But it needs every ounce of self-confidence to stand in the presence of the classically beautiful County Hall.
It is not surprising that some people have found the sculpture jarring, but I believe we should resist the reflex to reject it. The Gateway needs time to become part of the town.
Last summer Dún Laoghaire hosted a fantastic festival of world cultures. Surely we can also accommodate some visual diversity? - Yours, etc.,
Cllr CIARÁN FALLON, Lennox Street, Dublin 8.
