Sir, - I refer to the recent article by John Henry, outlining the DTI strategy for solving Dublin's traffic problems. He states that it is based on a vision of Dublin for the new millennium, which will not be realised if people do not change from using private cars to public transport, especially for routine journeys.
His vision of a pedestrian friendly city, laudable though it is, is clearly not shared by the many developers who are currently building massive city centre shopping malls with attendant multi storey car parks - presumably to cater for car borne customers. Other major car parks are under construction, or planned for sites scattered throughout the city centre. It is certain that the viability studies for these developments did not rely on weekend usage only.
Mr Henry states: "The DTI strategy requires a significant rearrangement of traffic in the city centre to enhance the economic vigour of the city etc., etc." In light of the apparent conflict between the expectations of city centre financiers/developers and the vision of the city held by the Dublin Transportation Office, could Mr Henry please explain what he means by "significant rearrangement"? - Yours, etc.,
