Sir, - The present traffic chaos in Dublin demands decisive, remedial action, and the prospect of a fast, reliable, safe and frequent tram service (the LRT) is obviously very attractive. This is a major project for the city. It will cost a lot of money, take a lot, of time and cause a lot of disruption to traffic and to business. It is therefore, essential that we get it right.
If "getting, it right" means that the light rail system should go underground at some points, then it should go underground, allowing surface traffic to proceed without the consequent, frequent disruption that would arise from the LRT travelling through narrow city streets. The question of the extra cost, and how to provide the necessary safety and security measures, should not stand in the way of doing the job properly. - Yours etc.
