Sir, Frank McDonald's article on the proposed Dublin Port Tunnel shows clearly that the residents of Marino were right in their fears. If this tunnel goes ahead the following will happen.
The residents will experience noise and vibrations, controlled explosions, ground movements, re-location of water mains, gas mains, ESB cables and Telecom Eireann ducts. Traffic diversions will be inevitable and there will be a 39 per cent increase in traffic on the East Wall Road.
In Fairview Park, it will lead to the demolition of a house, numerous trees and above all the local children's playground. Rail services too will be disrupted. It will pass directly underneath 273 properties at a depth of 16 metres. Near the portals there will be a massive increase in the levels of nitrogen dioxide. Despite the fact that it will reduce traffic by 10 per cent on our own roads think we all have a duty to support our neighbours.
The Dublin Port Tunnel is not good for the people of Marino and it is certainly not good for the environment. It's time to think again about this tunnel. Yours, etc., Griffith Avenue, Dublin 9.
