Sir, - Before flying out of Dublin on Christmas Eve I was perturbed to see a lone suitcase lying on an internal airport road (presumably it fell off en route to the aircraft). For 10 minutes I watched various ground crew walk and drive past the bag. Some stopped and had a look, others steered round it; all left the bag where it was (in the rain). Aside from the obvious security questions, did no member of staff feel an obligation to try to get the bag to the correct plane?
I reported the bag to a security guard and was told condescendingly that it would be dealt with. Twenty-five minutes later I looked again. The bag had been joined by another one. Two passengers minus luggage. I asked at an Aer Lingus desk (opposite a window that offered a good view of the bags) and was told that security always dealt with these things. Not that security had been informed and were dealing with it, mind you, but that they were bound to know. Incredulous, I asked about the security and customer service implications and was greeted with a shrug.
So, if you travelled out of Dublin airport on Christmas Eve and your luggage didn't travel with you, this could be the explanation. - Yours, etc.,
B. Bell, Victoria Road, Rathgar, Dublin 6.
