Madam, – Your edition of March 6th reports that Dublin City Council is bidding for Dublin to be designated Unesco City of Literature. One wishes it well.
But how will the City Council explain that the Irish Writers’ Centre at Parnell Square, the country’s first such centre, its biggest, and a major component of literature in Dublin for many years, has been stymied by The Arts Council’s removal of funding? It will be interesting to see what sort of cultural “spin” is devised to explain away this little embarrassment. – Yours, etc,
