Sir, - I am feeling very aggrieved at the moment. I am just approaching my 70th birthday and got a reminder in the post about my driving licence together with a form to be completed by my doctor.
As you know, my fellow senior citizens and I are precluded from having a 10-year licence, which is understandable. However, I do not see why we are penalised financially when we have no discretion as to the length of licence we may apply for. If my mathematics are correct, £20 divided by 10 equals £2 a year for a 10-year licence. I, on the other hand, have to pay £12 for three years, plus £28 to my doctor to complete the form, which equals £40. The licence, therefore, costs me £13.34 a year. I feel that we senior citizens, should have to pay only £6 for three years. Also, there is a case to be made for local authorities paying the doctor's fee since they make it a condition that the form must be completed when applying for the licence. - Yours, etc.,
Mary Quigley, Stradbrook Lawn, Blackrock, Co Dublin.
