Sir, In addition to the rules of the road for drivers according to Murphy's Law (Jennifer Wann October 15th), I would like to include another rule which appears in the Rural Edition:
When driving at night, ensure that your dimmed headlights are not directed downwards, below the line of sight of oncoming drivers. The following are acceptable:
1. One headlight permanently on full beam, the other dimmed;
2. One headlight dimmed, the other completely broken;
3. If your dimmed headlights are unlikely to blind other drivers, don't use them, but drive on your full headlights permanently. - Yours, etc..
Ballymahon Road,
Athlone.
PS While "daytime running lamps" (Daithi Hanly, October 15th) are, of course, a good idea, I wonder how many accidents are caused by drivers being blinded by badly adjusted "dimmed" headlights at night?
