Madam, - I am glad Dublin City Council at its recent meeting did not decide to make any change to the name of the Spire. Although some of my friends think that the monument needed an Irish symbolism because of its pre-eminent location, I think it already has it.
Whenever I look at the Spire it reminds me of Church spires I know here in Dublin and around the country. The Spire, by its name and its appearance, reminds me of the contribution of the Church to Irish life. I am glad that the city fathers have given us a Spire which for me articulates the central place of religion in the heritage of Ireland, going back to the time of St Patrick who brought the lights of Christianity to this country.
It is a uniting Spire. It can be both Catholic and Protestant. I look forward to seeing its official inauguration on St Patrick's Day. - Yours, etc.,
MARY MURPHY,
New Street,
Dublin 8.
