Sir, - The contribution that Dr Michael Kelleher made to research on suicide and attempted suicide in Ireland cannot be underestimated. He dedicated much of his life to understanding why people commit suicide. He has been the leading light of suicidology in Ireland for many years and inspired others to look upon suicide in a more caring, less judgmental manner.
In recent times, more than anyone else in Ireland, he has been responsible for destigmatising the whole issue of suicidal behaviour. He was instrumental in setting up the National Suicide Foundation and the Irish Association for Suicidology. For this we are gratefully indebted. His contribution will continue to be acknowledged. - Yours, etc., Dr Rory O'Connor, Lecturer in Psychology, University of Strathclyde,
Glasgow,
Scotland.
