Madam, – The recent ruling by the High Court in relation to the Donegal South West byelection highlights many of the faults which can be attributed to an outdated political establishment. While the Government tries desperately to cling to power by appealing the decisions of the court system, the Opposition bask in the limelight in getting one over on their rivals.
It seems that in a time of great economic uncertainty, where the elected individuals of the country should be attempting to come up with paths to lead us from the brink, the old political divides are continuing to rule the agenda.
Regardless of the decisions taken by the people of Donegal in the coming weeks, the state of the country is still in limbo until we see real political reform in which political dynasties and the old ways of doing business within Leinster House are eradicated forever. The distaste the electorate feels at this time for the political system is truly worrying and may forever harm the democratic system. Until honesty and good leadership are restored by our elected representatives, the people of Ireland’s faith in politics is extremely questionable. – Yours, etc,
