Madam, - As an elderly man living in rural Ireland, I was very disturbed by RTÉ1 television's Cracking Crime programme last Thursday night.
In the name of entertainment, viewers were shown the graphic re-enactment of the brutal murder of an elderly man. That man could be me, or any one of the tens of thousands of vulnerable people living the length and breath of this country.
There are tens of thousands of pensioners and disabled persons, and countless numbers of single occupiers whose tranquillity could not have been unaffected by what they saw. For the many people who live in fear, this programme did nothing for their peace of mind.
We think we are inured the daily violent attacks on people, but when you see one so graphically illustrated the impact is traumatic. - Yours, etc.
