Madam, - Nuala O'Faolain (April 29th) laments the disrespect shown by the proposal to demolish of 16 Moore Street, where the leaders of the 1916 Rising had their last meeting before their surrender. Prof Donnchadh Ó Corráin of UCC (May 3rd) decries the tendency of UCD authorities to leave chairs relating to the study of ancient Ireland vacant.
On that same page Richard Marsh, a tour guide, tells how "ridiculously embarrassing" is the lack of public toilets for tourists on the Hill of Tara, a fact that displays lack of respect for them and for the place itself.
Come to think of it, is not the general lack of respect for heritage in this State "ridiculously embarrssing"? A philosopher once said that a nation without a sense of its past has no future. The truth of that is all around us. - Yours, etc.,
