Madam, – Orla Tinley's complaints against Dr James Reilly seem to be twofold: first, that he visited her in hospital last year without calling in advance, and second, that he did not agree to be interviewed for her recent Prime Timeprogramme (Opinion, April 15th).

While these two facts may have discommoded Ms Tinsley, they are hardly evidence of a “shocking disregard for cystic fibrosis needs” on the part of Dr Reilly or the Government. She does not cite any policy decisions of the Government to support this claim.

My family, like so many others, has been touched by CF so I can entirely understand Ms Tinsley’s anger and frustration. However, this hardly excuses such a personalised attack on someone who has had responsibility for this issue for less than two months.

Ten years of neglect cannot be undone in six weeks, and the plight of CF sufferers will most certainly not be solved on the basis of the number of media interviews given by the Minister for Health. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – With all the talk of Seanad reform, would it be way too much for the likes of Orla Tinsley to get one of Enda Kenny’s nominations and have a genuine voice where it may do some good? –
