Sir, - Commenting on the Public Accounts Committee report, Bertie Ahern said this was no longer a high tax country and there was no justification for anyone trying to evade tax.

Does he mean that when taxes are high, there is justification for evading tax? Does he mean that lower paid workers who, most people agree, shouldn't be in the tax net at all are justified in evading tax? Does he mean that farmers who believe they are paying too much tax can now evade with justification? Does he mean that the single income family, now being taxed more than their richer friends on two incomes, can evade tax?.

Or is he throwing a sop to the wealthy who were the ones who, helped by the banks and other financial institutions, evaded tax, and thereby curtailed improvements in Social Welfare, Health, Education, etc.? The Taoiseach should have unequivocally condemned them. - Yours, etc.,
