Madam, - The Government partners never had any option in regard to how to move forward on providing the next chunk of terminal capacity at Dublin Airport.

Because they have play-acted with the problem since coming into government in 2002, they left themselves hamstrung for options as the screams of the oppressed masses at Collinstown could no longer be ignored.

The fantasy of Séamus Brennan's "indications of interest" by the private sector in developing the second terminal was fully exposed by his successor last week and in so doing Mr Cullen made more enemies on his own side of the house than he already has across the floor.

The PDs' concern about the seriousness of the commitment to the so-called third terminal is risible and demonstrates the depth of hypocrisy that can be reached when trying to dress up a shambles.

The third terminal will arrive not because of anything Bertie promises Mary but because of growth in passenger numbers.

The hope is that when this time rolls around we will have people in government with greater concern for the orderly development of aviation infrastructure and less for the overblown ideology of "shopping around" and catering to a myriad of vested interests.

It should not be forgotten that this Government which has now copper-fastened two or three years of serious strife at Dublin Airport arising from its ham-fisted efforts to resolve political differences, is the same one that burned about €250 million of taxpayers' money in the form of the fall in Aer Lingus's market value arising from its failure to properly manage its relationship with Willie Walsh and his team.

The announcement of the cancellation of the Orlando service confirms the direction the airline is taking since the Walsh trio decided that life was too short to put up with what was coming out of Kildare Street. - Yours, etc,
