Sir, I have been reading the recent correspondence on feminism in these pages with growing disbelief. Equality for women in Ireland? Not when this Government believes that the life of a pregnant woman is worth less than that of the foetus she bears.
I am proud to be a feminist, and am proud of the gains that women have made in recent times, but I fear that the cause of gender equality will be set back for many years if the futile, unnecessary and deeply hypocritical referendum proposed by Fianna Fβil and the PDs is passed.
In no other European country are the rights of a woman so diminished by her becoming pregnant; in no other country is suicide not regarded as life-threatening.
In the name of equality and of women's right to life, let us defeat this fundamentalist outrage. - Yours, etc.,
