Deaths On The Roads

Sir, - The recent article in your paper commenting on road deaths in counties Louth and Meath is to be commended. Road improvements are welcome and should help road safety. However, it is depressingly true that a large number of road deaths in our region are the result of drink driving, speeding and inadequate attention to safety.

It is clear that Irish road users are not as safety-conscious as our nearest neighbours in Northern Europe. The sight of speeding cars, unrestrained children in cars, unlit cyclists and pedestrians on dark roads, poorly maintained vehicles and road users disobeying the rules of the road is particularly alarming to those of us who have got used to driving on the safer roads in nearby countries.

It is also a depressing fact that for every one person who is killed on the road, there are another three or four permanently disabled. - Yours, etc.,
