Dean elect of Christ Church

Madam, - In the land of the "begrudger", the last place I expected to witness it was in your esteemed publication

Madam, - In the land of the "begrudger", the last place I expected to witness it was in your esteemed publication. However, the headline on the report of the appointment of the new dean elect of Christ Church Cathedral (p6 Feb 26th), "Former priest to be Christ Church dean", could be so misconstrued. The Venerable Dermot Dunne is not a former priest; he is a priest. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1984, he was not re-ordained when he was licensed as an Anglican priest in the Church of Ireland. His ordination remained valid and true. Therefore at no point could the dean elect be described as a "former priest". Finally, let me add my wholehearted personal congratulations to the dean elect and his wife Celia on this appointment. The Christian community within our capital city and nation can only be the richer for his previous ministry within the Roman Catholic Church. I wish him every blessing in this esteemed and historic role. - Yours, etc,

TREVOR HOLMES,

Maynooth,

Co Kildare.
